My First Genially - Word Cloud Project

This project is called Word Cloud: Getting to know your classmates and it has been designed for a group of students in their second year of secondary school, though it may also be carried out with other levels, making the required language and contents more or less difficult. The idea is to create a fun project to start after the initial evaluation to review basic language and for the kids to get to know one another a little better. The final product will be an oral presentation in Genially in which they introduce one of their classmates using a Word Cloud to help them create a visual image. The objectives of this project are: 

  1. Produce oral and written texts describing personality, likes, hobbies and other personal details. 

  2. Understand oral texts about interest, hobbies, personality and other personal details.  

  3. Create a word cloud in WordArt and a presentation in Genially.

  4. Interact with classmates in the target language. 

The project should last about four weeks, given that students in their second year only have three hours of English class a week. The idea of doing it straight after the initial evaluation is to review basic structures that students may have forgotten over the summer.

The project has four stages which are the following:

STAGE 1

In this stage of the project, in groups of two, students are going to write a series of interesting questions that they can ask their partner. They may also look on the internet for some inspiration. 

After this, as a class, a final list of questions will be decided as a class that will then be used to for the interviews. 

Students will practise asking and answering these questions by moving around the class and talking to the classmates. The teacher will also move around the class and take notes of the typical mistakes made. 

STAGE 2

Based on observation during the class mingle speaking activity, the teacher will provide the students with a list of sentences containing the type of mistakes students made. They will work in groups of two to correct these mistakes. 

At this point, the class is going to focus on the grammar and vocabulary they’ll need to discuss their hobbies, interests, and other personal information. 

STAGE 3

In this stage students are going to interview their partner and write down notes about their answers. 

After that, pupils are going to create a WordArt word cloud that creates a visual image of the student they are going to introduce to the rest of the class. 

Students will create a presentation in Genially to introduce their partner to the rest of the class. They will be asked to look at the rubric before creating their presentations. 

STAGE 4

Students' oral presentations will be evaluated using a rubric, provided to them beforehand to guide them with their presentation. They will also be asked to peer evaluate the presentations of the rest of the class.

Students would work in pairs decided by the teacher to ensure that students with a lot of difficulties are not paired together or to avoid any kind of arguments. 

To review the vocabulary and grammar, additional materials will be used such ad online videos, online interactive activities and handouts. 

Genially is a great way to create visual aids so that it is easier to follow what is being said in a foreign language. While Genially is great, if I could change something about the project, I wouldn’t make it compulsory as there are many other great apps that can be used such as Canva or Presentations. I would let students choose what they are the most comfortable using.

I have spent some time looking at Luis Alberto´s blog ( Five Ways to Improve Your English ) and the task that I like the most is his most recent one which makes use of Genially. I love doing tasks with the kids that require them to use their imagination and this task requires exactly that. I also like the fact that Luis Alberto asked his students to peer evaluate as it’s a good way for students to reflect on their work and also to get them to focus on something while listening to their classmates’ presentations. I would most likely create a similar task, though I would provide students with the rubric I'll use to evaluate them beforehand and possibly focus on different grammar.

My Reflections On Reading

My Reflections On Reading Have a look at the images and think about your own reading habits. Have they changed? What kind of books or texts are the people reading? Did they choose the books themselves or did someone else choose for them? In most of the pictures, it seems people are reading books (either in a paper or a digital format). While people read books for many different reasons, I think most of the reading we generally do on a daily basis tends to be shorter texts, things like reading Tweets, posts on social media, the information we see displayed in our surroundings, instructions, subtitles and so on. Though part of this reading may be for pleasure, there is also a lot we do out of necessity. It is difficult to fathom whether the people in the pictures have chosen their own reading material, although it is likely that the children in the classroom did not choose their book given that all the kids have got the same one. Using Storyjumper

  Here is my story created on Storyjumper . In the previous activity, I realised that I rarely use the process approach to writing in my English classroom and so I thought I would try to come up with a sequence following this approach while also incorporating the tool Storyjumper. I had a look at both Pixton and Storyjumper before getting started and I found the scenes and props were much more limited on Pixton leading me to opt for the latter.   Given that we are towards the end of the first term, realistically I have not got time to carry out the sequence explained below with any of my groups, therefore I will have to explain it from a hypothetical point of view.  The sequence would be carried out during the Halloween period with a group of students in their 3rd year of CSE, and the story in Storyjumper would be the final product. While there would be cooperative activities in groups of four leading up to the final product, the final product in Storyjumper would be an individual task
